10 Breakout Actors to Watch Out For
Dane DeHaan:
He's been under most directors' radar since late 2010, when he played Jesse D'Amato the part of In Treatment. DeHaan, who was just 23 years old at the time, was immediately pegged as an actor to watch, but his youth has almost been a barrier to his rare ability to display such psychological depth. His acting in Chronicle was phenomenal. There aren't a lot of emotionally challenging roles out there for a fresh-faced twenty something, but it's his role as Harry Osborn in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, that is sure to get DeHaan his most commercial attention to date.
Ansel Elgort:
Ansel's acting efforts at an early age have paid off: he scored leading roles in two blockbuster films in 2014. He shot to stardom as Caleb in the first installment of the sci-fi trilogy Divergent (2014). Ansel also stared in the onscreen adaptation of the novel The Fault in Our Stars (2014), earning him a very large global fandom. Ansel is also involved in the comedy Men, Women & Children (2014) starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Garner. We can pretty much guarantee that newcomer Ansel Elgort is going to go places if he keeps this record up.
Addison Timlin:
Fans of the TV series Californication are likely already familiar with Addison Timlin. The 22-year-old is featured in the series' fourth season, where she plays an actress involved with Hank Moody. Her beginnings in the industry dates back in 2000: she played every orphan in a national tour of Annie before being cast as the red-headed moppet herself at the age of nine. But all of that's just been building up to 2014, in which Timlin's big-screen career will be taking off in a big way thanks to enviable parts in That Awkward Moment, The Town That Dreaded Sundown, and the lead in Fallen.
Imogen Poots:
Despite being only 24 years old, English actress Imogen Poots is no newcomer. As the daughter of television producer Trevor Poots, she's been around the business all of her life. And she's been landing parts in films like, V for Vendetta, 28 Weeks Later, Me and Orson Welles, Jane Eyre, Fright Night, Cracks, A Late Quartet, and The Look of Love. But 2014 has her poised to take the lead in five features That Awkward Moment, Knight of Cups with Natalie Portman and Christian Bale, Squirrels to the Nuts with Jennifer Aniston and the video game-turned-action movie Need for Speed.
Dave Franco:
Dave Franco has been quietly building a strong body of work since 2006, when the 28-year-old Palo Alto native made his first screen appearance on the series 7th Heaven and a drug dealer in 21 Jump Street. While 2013 has seen his stock rise with marquee parts in Warm Bodies and Now You See Me, it's all just serving as a warm-up for 2014, which has seen Franco and Zac Efron doing their best Robert De Niro imitations in Neighbors, filming Business Trip with Vince Vaughn and Tom Wilkinson, and possibly taking orders from his brother as the elder Franco directs, stars in, and adapts William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury.
Zoey Deutch:
Zoey's first leading role was in Mayor Cupcake. She was quickly picked up on Disney Channel's Suite Life On Deck, where she played main character's, Zach's, love interest. From there she gained fans all over the world, guest staring in Criminal Minds: Suspect behaviour and NCIS, which lead her to landing a role in Hallelujah. She has just finished working on and promoting Beautiful Creatures. She was then quickly signed on to ABC Family's series, Switched At Birth. Zoey has now been casted on the new film franchise, Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters.
Douglas Booth:
Any female viewer who's watched the latest 'Romeo & Juliet', are probably swooning over its leading man, Douglas Booth. This year is definitely his break-out year. He has three upcoming movies. He's starring in "Noah" alongside Emma Watson, "Jupiter Ascending" with Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis, and "Posh." With all these fantastic roles lined up, we are eager to see how far he can go with his talent.
Theo James:
Many actors work their entire careers to be cast in a Woody Allen movie but Theo James pretty much started there. After making his debut with a part in the BBC series A Passionate Woman in 2010, the 29-year-old Oxford-born Brit made his big-screen debut alongside Josh Brolin, Naomi Watts, and Freida Pinto in Allen's You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger. James has proven himself adept at comedy, action, and period drama. In 2014, James continued to explore new genres such as sci-fi insurgent in Divergent, and a would-be murder suspect in London Fields.
Gabriella Wilde:
British model-turned-actress Gabriella Wilde caught the attention of Hollywood earlier this fall when she revived the role of Sue Snell in Kimberly Peirce's Carrie remake. Modeling since the age of 14, the spotlight is nothing new to Wilde, who has appeared in ad campaigns for Burberry, Topshop, and Abercrombie & Fitch. Her face and talents are about to become familiar to a whole new audience in 2014, when the 24-year-old resurrects another iconic teenager: Jade Butterfield, the Endless Love remake where Brooke Shields originally starred back in 1981.
Joel Kinnaman:
Yes, you've very likely seen Joel Kinnaman before, either on the small screen in "The Killing" or in various big-screen roles, but we think 2014 is his big breakout year because he is the new RoboCop. And just look at those eyes, there is something sincere and compelling there, perfect for a man who struggles with also being a machine.
