UNDP-PCJSS understanding

A welcome development
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Parbattya Chattagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS) have ironed out some of their differences paving the resumption of development activity in the hill districts. After a lot of deliberation, both sides have found ways to carry forward the stalled development projects to the relief of thousands of inhabitants of the Hill Tracts region. Now, the people, who had been suffering from negligence for so long, can hope for a change in their fortune, for a better future.

What's most encouraging to learn is that both UNDP and PCJSS have struck a creative idea to end the stalemate. For example, they are now targeting most disadvantaged groups as the beneficiaries of development irrespective of their origin. The UNDP will provide training and tools to indigenous communities for taking up income generating activities under a multi million dollar project. This will only help brighten up their future, show them a ray of hope for which they had been waiting for a long time.

It also augurs well that the plight of those people affected by the Kaptai dam as well as those indigenous groups who returned from refugee camps of India will also be addressed soon by the UNDP.

We must commend both UNDP and PCJSS for putting their differences aside and placing the interests of the underprivileged communities of Hill Tracts high on their agenda.

We welcome the forward-looking initiative taken by the UNDP and PCJSS for the development of the region which lately hogged some negative headlines otherwise. What they have now decided can make a difference to the lives of the indigenous people.
