Maoists slit Throat of ex-Nepali PM's cousin
Suspected Maoist rebels fighting to overthrow Nepal's monarchy slit the throat of a cousin of former royalist prime minister Surya Bahadur Thapa, police and relatives said yesterday.
Armed Maoists late Thursday barged into the home of Ramji Thapa in eastern Nepal's Dhankuta district and cut his throat with knives before running off, a police official said.
A relative said he believed the Maoists had deliberately targetted the family, noting that they seized the then premier's country house earlier this year and distributed the land to peasants.
Thapa, considered a staunch royalist and appointee of King Gyanendra, resigned as prime minister on May 7 as protests mounted, demanding the monarch restore elected rule.
