Security lapses inside jail

Discovery of a grenade should be an eye opener
We are alarmed by the grave security lapses at the Dhaka Central Jail in recent times. First the discovery of a grenade similar to the ones used at the main opposition Awami League rally last Saturday, inside the jail compound; and now the seizure of two truck load of contraband goods like marijuana, phensidyl and reportedly a cellphone during a search. It raises a few pertinent questions regarding the security measures at the largest jail of the country that houses some of the most wanted criminals.

Firstly, did the jail authority take any necessary steps to put a stop to all the malpractice and corruption that is rampant in the jail? Secondly, if they did, how would they explain the latest incidents that could have put not only just the ordinary prisoners' lives at risk, but also those of the high profile prisoners? Let's not forget that the grenade was found in a sewer between cell no 90 and 26, the cell where high profile prisoners are kept.

The initial explanation by the Inspector General, Prison for this sensational discovery sounds so implausible that it only reaffirms our belief that no emphasis was given to security of the jail. One shudders at the thought of the consequences had the grenade detonated before discovery.

We believe that the authority simply ignored the whole issue of ensuring proper security and restoring discipline, both inside and outside the jail even though there have been allegations of widespread corruption and malpractice. In fact such allegations involving the jail officials in collusion with some people outside the jail are not new. Visitors fall prey to the illegal practices at the jail gate and easily get exploited. There have also been extensive media reports on how hardcore criminals get facilities that are not allowed to them right in front of the eyes of high officials, but the situation never changed.

These sort of illegal practices can not be allowed to go on any further; especially after the grenade discovery episode. We hope the probe committee formed to investigate the matter will be able to determine how the deadly weapon slipped through the security cordon. It is expected that the situation will improve in the wake of recent discoveries.
