Allocation rises by Tk 1,445 crore from the outgoing fiscal year’s initial budget

Draft to be opened for public opinion before final approval by commission

The Election Commission (EC) is likely to get an allocation of around Tk 2,900 crore in the National Budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year for its operations, including holding local government polls.

Elections to local government bodies are expected to begin with union parishad polls in October, with the schedule likely to be announced in August.

EC moves to standardise rules for five-tier local government polls

The Election Commission’s proposal for a nearly Tk 493 crore infrastructure project was turned down by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (Ecnec) on May 13, with the government directing the commission to use space in upazila complexes instead of constructing new offices.

The government is preparing to hold elections to local government bodies in phases, beginning this September-October and continuing into early next year.
