Bangladesh Bank made over Tk 26,000 crore profit in FY26
Bangladesh Bank’s net profit rose 15 percent year-on-year to Tk 26,023 crore in the just-concluded 2025-26 fiscal year.
A large portion of this profit came from lending to commercial banks and investments of the foreign exchange reserves, officials of the central bank said.
The board of directors of the banking regulator approved its financial statements for the last fiscal year at a meeting yesterday presided over by Governor Md Mostaqur Rahman.
The banking regulator made a gross profit of Tk 35,016 crore in FY26, while its expenditure hit Tk 8,993 crore and it handed over Tk 25,977 crore to the government.
The board also approved an incentive bonus equivalent to six times the basic salary for Bangladesh Bank officials. As a result, all employees will receive a bonus equivalent to six months of their basic salary.
The central bank employees received a similar bonus in the previous year as well.
Officials of the accounts and budgeting department of the central bank said its lending operations remained strong despite a slowdown in the economy.
As revenue declined, both the government and commercial banks increased their borrowing from Bangladesh Bank, boosting the central bank’s interest income.
The central bank also earned good returns from investments of its foreign exchange reserves in different countries, contributing to the rise in its overall profit.
Bank officials said Bangladesh Bank tends to earn lower profits when the economy is performing well and higher profits during economic downturns.
