Every person to be brought under Bangla QR payments: finance minister

People from all walks of life will be brought under QR code-based digital financial services, Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said today.

At the inauguration of shopping using Bangla QR code in Dhaka’s Banani, he said any transaction conducted through the QR code would be free of charge under the government’s initiative to build a cashless Bangladesh and digital economy, according to a press release.

Under the scheme, ordinary citizens, footpath vendors and small traders will be able to receive funds directly into their accounts across any bank or mobile financial service provider, he added.

Acknowledging the initial rollout phase, the minister said minor technical challenges or temporary hiccups might arise but expressed confidence that they could be resolved swiftly.

Highlighting the global context, he added that cashless transactions had proven safe and successful across many developed and fast-growing economies.

Bangladesh Bank is working towards making the practice universal across the country, he said, adding that citizens, businesspeople and service providers should adopt the technology without hesitation.
