NBR intensifies monitoring of tax deduction at source, forms teams at tax zones

Star Business Report

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has strengthened its nationwide monitoring and verification of tax deducted at source (TDS) in its bid to increase revenue collection.

It said special teams formed under the tax zones have started monitoring. As part of their work, taxmen can enter and inspect any business or office under the Income Tax Act, 2023.

The NBR said taxmen are empowered to examine books of account, bank statements, receipts, and digital records, and access computer systems and electronic devices and break passwords or encryption where necessary.

Officials may also temporarily seize documents or devices and collect copies of records, according to a press release issued today.

The tax authority warned against any obstruction, saying that penalties apply for obstruction or non-cooperation with such activities under section 147(2) of the law.

Taxpayers have been urged to deposit TDS through A-Chalan by mentioning the appropriate provision of the law and the correct economic code.

For queries or grievances regarding Section 147, it suggested that taxpayers contact the member secretary of the NBR's related committee at assistance147nbr@gmail.com.
