JnU JCD hands man to police over suspected Chhatra League links

A group of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activists at Jagannath University today handed a man over to police on suspicion of links to the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL). The man identified himself as a rickshaw-puller.

Police identified him as Md Monir of Barguna.

According to eyewitnesses, Monir was chanting the slogan “Joy Bangla” while passing the university’s main entrance around noon. JCD activists stopped and questioned him before handing him over to police.

Explaining the move, JnU JCD Convener Mehedi Hasan Himel said party activists had been taking positions on and around the campus since Saturday to protest a “lockdown” programme called by the Awami League, whose activities remain banned.

“Around noon, a Chhatra League activist on a rickshaw saw us and shouted the ‘Joy Bangla’ slogan,” Himel said. “We then stopped him to verify his identity and handed him over to police after confirming his affiliation with Chhatra League.”

Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rabiul Islam confirmed that JCD activists had handed over an individual to police custody. During preliminary questioning, the man identified himself as a rickshaw puller.

Asked about his alleged links to Chhatra League, Rabiul said the man did not admit to any involvement with the BCL. Police are currently making inquiries in his ancestral village to ascertain his background.
