Two murder cases filed over deaths during CCC polls
Two separate murder cases were filed, accusing several, over two deaths on Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) election day.
The cases were filed with Government Railway Police Station and Pahartholi Police Station yesterday.
Sohrab Hasan, sub-inspector of Government Railway Police Station, told The Daily Star that Jahanara Begum, elder sister of Alauddin Alo (28), who died during election violence at the city's Ambagan area, filed a murder case, naming nine people and 20 other unknown assailants.
Hasan Imam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Pahartholi Police Station, said Jinnat Ara, mother of Nizam Uddin Munna (30), who was reportedly killed by his younger brother Salauddin over a family feud, filed a murder case naming his own son Salauddin as key accused.
Two unknown persons were also accused, and the main accused fled his home. Police are trying to locate him.
Alo, a construction worker, was shot dead at the area in the morning of election day. His family alleged that the thugs took the firearms from officers of Khulsi Police Station and opened fire on Alo, who was heading to his workplace.
Munna was stabbed dead due to the feud, but locals said both brothers belonged to camps of two rival election candidates.
EVM VANDALISED, BNP-SUPPORTED COUNCILLOR CANDIDATE ON 1-DAY REMAND
A Chattogram court yesterday placed a BNP-supported councillor candidate for CCC election on one-day remand, in connection with vandalising two Electronic Voting Machines (EVM) inside a polling station at Patharghata area on Wednesday.
The court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohiuddin Murad placed Mohammed Ismail Bali on remand, after police produced him before court, with 10-day remand prayer, said Assistant Commissioner (Prosecution) Shahabuddin Ahmed of Chattogram Metropolitan Police.
Bali was immediate past councillor of Ward-34.
Earlier, AL and BNP supporters locked into a clash inside Patharghata City Corporation Girls' High School polling centre, where the EVM machines were vandalised at one point. After the incident, voting was suspended at the station. Later, police detained Bali.
Following the incident, Md Shahjahan, the station's assistant presiding officer, filed a case, accusing Bali and 24 others with Kotwali Police Station on Wednesday night. He was then shown arrested in the case, said Nezam Uddin, OC of the station.
Apart from that, 40-50 unnamed persons were also made accused in the case.
