Child marriage bid foiled

A schoolgirl was saved from underage marriage following timely intervention of the local administration at Chandanpat village in Aditmari upazila of the district on Saturday.

Family sources said marriage of Hari Priya Rani, 13, a class five student of Chandanpat Government Primary School, and daughter of Shiben Chandra Roy of the village, was arranged on Saturday night.

Being informed, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Jahurul Islam along with police rushed to the spot and stopped the marriage.

However, the girl's parents, relatives and bridegroom managed to flee the scene, sensing the presence of the UNO and the law enforcers.

Local police confirmed the incident.
