Man hurt in Benapole clash dies
A man, who sustained critical injuries in a clash between two groups of villagers at Raghunathpur village in Benapole of Jessore on April 24, died at a hospital in the capital on Monday night.
The deceased is Asgar Ali, 58, son of Sagir Uddin of the village. With the death of Asgar, the number of people killed in the clash rose to three.
On April 24, two people were killed and at least four others injured as two groups of villagers clashed over cutting of a fallen tree at the village, said Benapole police Officer in-Charge Apurba Hasan.
The deceased are Md Abdullah, 52, former member of Bahadurpur Union Parishad, and Shamsur Rahman, 40, son of Khalilur Rahman of the village.
Injured Sumon, 23, Asgar Ali, 58, M Abdullah, 35, and Hafizur Rahman, 35, were admitted to Jessore Medical College Hospital and Sharsha Burujbagan Hospital. Of them, Asgar was later shifted to a private hospital in Dhaka as his condition deteriorated.
Police said Abdullah was attacked by a group, led by one Nasir Uddin and Alauddin, with sharp weapons as he tried to prevent them from taking away a roadside tree that was uprooted during a storm the previous night.
Following the attack, two groups of villagers locked in a clash that left Abdullah and Shamsur dead on the spot.
On information, police went to the spot and brought the situation under control. They also detained two villagers named Giasuddin and Abdur Rahman for their alleged involvement in the attack, the OC added.
