A programme marking the National Mourning Day was foiled over political enmity between the chairman of Lokhmikunda Union Parishad and a local Awami League leader in Ishwardi upazila of the district yesterday.

Chairman Md Anisul Haque Mollah blamed the men of Anisur Rahman Sharif, secretary of Lokhmikunda union unit of AL, for the incident.

Anisul arranged a discussion programme on the union parishad premises at noon, marking the 40th death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

"The men of Sharif prevented guests from attending the programme by putting up barricades at different points on the way to the venue," said Anisul, former secretary of the union unit of Jubo League, adding that they also snatched sweets and other food items ordered for the programme and vandalised a vehicle on the way.

"As our men came under the attack on the way, we could not finally hold the programme," he said.

Contacted, Sharif said the UP chairman brought the false allegation against him for harassing him politically.

Those who did not get invitation for the programme, took away the food items, said Officer-in-Charge of Ishwardi Police Station Biman Kumar Das.
