UZ chairman lands in jail

A Bogra court yesterday sent the chairman of Sonatola Upazila Parishad to jail, rejecting his bail prayer in three sabotage cases.

The accused is chairman Syed Ahsanul Toiyub Zakir, 50, joint secretary of the district unit of BNP, and president of the upazila unit, said police.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Waheduzzamn's court-3 passed the order when Zakir sought bail in the cases filed with Sonatola Police Station.

In Gaibandha, police in a drive arrested a Jamaat leader and two others at Bonarpara rail gate in Saghata upazila of the district yesterday, reports our correspondent.

The arrestees are Enamul Huq, 50, secretary of the upazila unit of Jamaat, its activist Rana, 35, and Jewel, 27, activist of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD).

The Jamaat leader was accused in several cases, including one for violence, said Sub-Inspector Azizur Rahman, in-charge of Bonarpara police investigation centre.

The arrestees were later sent to the district jail, said the SI.
