PM inaugurates year-long Nazrul Year celebrations
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Thursday formally launched the year-long Nazrul Year 2026–27 celebrations, describing National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam as a timeless voice against oppression, injustice and inequality whose legacy continues to inspire Bangladesh.
Joining the inauguration virtually from the Prime Minister’s Office, Tarique said Nazrul’s writings had shaped the country’s literary, cultural, political and intellectual life and remained relevant to every generation.
“Nazrul was an extraordinary genius whose influence has touched every stage of our national journey,” he said. “His works continue to inspire people to stand against injustice and oppression.”
The government has declared the period from May 25, 2026, to May 25, 2027, as Nazrul Year to mark the poet’s enduring contribution to the nation. Authorities are also examining the feasibility of declaring Trishal in Mymensingh, where Nazrul spent part of his youth, as Nazrul City.
The prime minister said Nazrul’s body of work transcended religious and cultural boundaries, embracing themes ranging from patriotism and rebellion to love, humanity, nature, spirituality and childhood.
He noted that the poet’s songs and poems inspired the Liberation War and later democratic movements, adding that Nazrul’s vision of equality remained relevant to the government’s commitment to building a society free from discrimination.
Referring to the challenges posed by rapid technological change and artificial intelligence, Tarique said Nazrul’s writings could help guide young people with enduring moral values. He also urged organisers to ensure greater participation by Nazrul scholars and researchers throughout the year-long observance.
The prime minister called on the National Committee for Nazrul Year to organise literary conferences, research initiatives, seminars, cultural festivals, Nazrul music performances, theatre festivals and art exhibitions across the country.
He also unveiled the official Nazrul Year logo and a commemorative postage stamp marking the celebrations.
The programme, held at the Secretariat, was chaired by Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Ray Chowdhury. It was attended by LGRD and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Information Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon, the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Policy and Strategy Zahed Ur Rahman, and Press Secretary AAM Saleh Shibly.
