After Venice milestone, Rubaiyat Hossain's ‘The Difficult Bride’ heads for TIFF

After making history as the first Bangladeshi feature film to be selected for the Orizzonti section of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, National Film Award-winning director Rubaiyat Hossain's "The Difficult Bride" has achieved another major milestone, earning a place in the official selection of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

Rubaiyat announced the news on social media, writing, "Next stop TIFF! See you there!", while sharing the film's screening schedule. "The Difficult Bride" will be screened on September 16 at 4:00pm and September 17 at 10:00pm at TIFF Lightbox Cinema 4 (Paul & Leah Atkinson Family Cinema), followed by a third screening on September 19 at 12:15pm at Scotiabank Theatre, Cinema 7.

"The Difficult Bride" is a psychological horror film directed by Rubaiyat Hossain. Set in contemporary Dhaka, it explores themes of beauty, womanhood, marriage, and social expectations through a supernatural lens.

"The Difficult Bride" stars newcomer Zaineen Chowdhury Karim in the lead role, alongside Azmeri Haque Badhan, Reekita Nondine Shimu, Sunerah Binte Kamal, Shatabdi Wadud, Saberi Alam, and Mohammed Bari.

This year's festival will feature the international premieres of several acclaimed films that recently received honours at the Cannes Film Festival. The lineup includes Caméra d'Or winner "Benimana" by Rwandan director Marie-Clémentine Dusabejambo, Jury Prize-winning "The Dreamed Adventure" by German filmmaker Belkis Grisebach, and Cannes Critics' Week winner "La Gradiva" by French director Marine Atlan.

Also featured in the programme are "Women Unknown" by Danish-Egyptian filmmaker May el-Toukhy, which is competing for the Golden Lion at this year's Venice International Film Festival, and "Conversation with the Sea" by Palestinian director Muayad Alayan, selected for the festival's Venice Spotlight section.

The festival will also showcase a strong animation lineup, including the North American premiere of Leah Nelson's "Tangles", alongside Annecy award-winning films "The Violinist", "Julian", and "Viva Carmen".
