Paramount+ brings back Alicia Silverstone as Cher in ‘Clueless’ sequel series

Nearly three decades after “Clueless” became a cult classic, Alicia Silverstone is set to reprise her iconic role as Cher Horowitz in a sequel series ordered by Paramount+.

The project, which was initially in development at Peacock in early 2025, has officially found a new home after the streaming service dropped it earlier this year. According to multiple reports, Paramount+ has given the series a six-episode order, with production expected to begin in Los Angeles in 2027.

Set in the present day, the sequel follows Cher as she navigates a new stage of life. Now a successful businesswoman and mother, Cher finds herself facing an unfamiliar challenge when her daughter enters high school.

The official logline reads: “Beloved Beverly Hills icon Cher Horowitz has figured out a lot: She’s successful in business and has mastered motherhood—that is, until her daughter’s high school years, and Cher finds that parenting a teenager makes her feel ‘clueless’ all over again.”

The series’ move to Paramount+ also keeps the franchise under the same corporate umbrella, as the original 1995 film was released by Paramount Pictures. While Universal Television was previously attached as a co-producing studio during the project’s development at Peacock, the sequel will now be produced solely by CBS Studios, which is owned by Paramount.

The new series is also part of Paramount+’s broader push to expand its slate of female-focused programming following the Paramount-Skydance merger. Recent additions to the platform include the legal drama “Discretion”, starring Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning, and the limited series “Fear Not”, led by Anne Hathaway.
