Sadia Ayman, Shofin Ahmed star in short film 'Aro Kichukhon'

In a busy and mechanical city, two strangers cross paths and share a few moments that might otherwise have gone unnoticed. It is around these fleeting moments and the possibility of unexpected connections that filmmaker Rubayet Mahmud has built his new short film, “Aro Kichukhon”.

The film marks Mahmud's return to making stories on his own terms after a long break. His last drama direction was “Tobuo Bhalobashi”, an instalment of “Closeup Kache Ashar Golpo”, in 2018. He later directed the series “Kabaddi” in 2023, while continuing to work regularly in advertising.

Speaking about “Aro Kichukhon”, Mahmud said that although he has remained active in advertising, the format offers limited opportunities to tell stories in the way he wants.

“I regularly work in advertising, but there is very little opportunity to tell stories in my own way. At one point, I felt that it was time to make a story of my own. That thought led to ‘Aro Kichukhon’,” he said.

Describing the film, he added, “The story is actually about a few moments shared by two strangers in a busy and mechanical city. Even in this city of stone, certain relationships can create special moments, and I wanted to tell the story of those moments.”

Mahmud has placed particular emphasis on the screenplay, describing “Aro Kichukhon” not only as a story but also as an experiment with a “structured screenplay”. He believes that even large-budget productions can fail to reach audiences as expected when they are held back by weak screenplays.

Sadia Ayman plays the female lead in the short film. According to Mahmud, the character required more than simply delivering dialogue or appearing in individual scenes, as it involved a number of subtle emotions. He praised Ayman for portraying those nuances naturally and convincingly.

Shofin Ahmed plays the male lead. A filmmaker who has also worked in advertising for years, Ahmed found acting to be a different experience, although Mahmud felt that his personality and screen presence suited the character.

Ripan Chowdhury handled cinematography, while Mazhar Rony is responsible for editing and Chinmoy Roy for colour grading. Jahid Nirob composed the background score and songs.
