11 to die for murder in Laxmipur

A court in Laxmipur yesterday sentenced 11 persons to death and acquitted four in a case filed for killing Jubo Dal activist Maulana Babar Miah in 2003.

Mohammad Saidur Rahman Gazi, additional sessions judge of Laxmipur, delivered the verdict.

The convicted are: Alam, son of Sabir Miah, Miraj, son of Bala Munshi, Manju, son of Joynal Abedin, Mahinuddin, son of Ali Haider, Kala Munshi, son of late Fazal Haque, Saiful Islam Mamun, son of Abdur Rauf, Abdus Shahid, son of Alim Aziz --  all from Titarkandi; Mainuddin, son of Suja Miah from Purba Rajapur, Morshed Alam, son of Jamaluddin from Gobindapur, Masud, son of Khalilur Rahman from Jagannathpur, and Mohammad Abdul Basher, son of Syed Ahmed from Madhya Gobindapur of Sadar upazila.

Four of the convicts -- Alam, Miraj, Manju and Mahinuddin -- were present before the court while the other seven remain at large.

According to court sources, the convicted offenders on the night of March 8, 2003 shot and stabbed to death local union Jubo Dal activist Maulana Babar Miah at Titarkandi village under Laxmipur Sadar upazila.

The court examined depositions of 23 persons in the case that was filed with Laxmipur Sadar Police Station by victim's brother Nurul Islam.
