Banani SI, 2 others held

Bangshal police arrested a sub-inspector of Banani Police Station and his source for allegedly trying to rob a “gold trader” at Fulbaria in the city Monday night.

A Dhaka court yesterday placed the suspended sub-inspector and his source on a three-day remands each, and the trader the duo were allegedly trying to rob on a five-day remand.

SI Ashraful Islam of Banani Police Station and his source Abdur Razzak were beaten up by a mob when they tried to snatch 900 grams of gold from one Rezaul Kabir.

Ashraful and Razzak forced Rezaul to get down from a bus at Fulbaria around 9:00pm and tried to get him into a CNG-run auto-rickshaw. 

Rezaul raised a hue and cry and locals came forward to help.

The mob caught the two and a patrol team of Bangshal Police Station detained them and the trader and took the three to the police station.

SI Helal Uddin of Bangshal told The Daily Star that when he detained them, he found a small packet tucked behind trader Rezaul's belt which had five gold bars weighing 900 grams.

During interrogation on the spot, Ashraful, who was in uniform and wearing a vest, told Helal that Rezaul had put his hand inside his pocket in the bus and he had detained Rezaul for attempting to pick his pocket.

Helal could not find anybody who could substantiate Ashraful's claim.

Rezaul told Helal that he bought the gold from Tantibazar and was about to go to Jessore. He told police that he was carrying the gold for someone else in exchange for money.

SI Helal filed two cases in this connection -- one against Ashraful and his source for attempting to mug Rezaul and the other against Rezaul under Special Powers Act.

Deputy Commissioner (Media) Maruf Hossain Sarder of Dhaka Metropolitan Police told The Daily Star that a three member probe committee, led by the joint commissioner (logistics), has been formed in connection with the incident.
