BCL leader held while abducting univ girl

A Chhatra League leader was arrested in Narayanganj last night while he was taking away a female private university student he had just abducted, police said.

Asim Dewan, 26, general secretary of Barisal City Chhatra League, along with two of his accomplices had forced the girl into a car in the capital's Basundhara Residential Area, said Ismail Hossain, officer-in-charge of Rupganj Police Station.

As the vehicle was approaching a police check-post in Rupganj around 8:00pm, the girl cried for help, he said, adding that the law enforcers and locals rushed to the car hearing her scream.

Asim and his driver, Liton Mollah, were caught, the girl was rescued and the vehicle was seized. The two accomplices of Asim, however, somehow fled, added the police officer.

He also claimed to have recovered an unlicensed firearm and five bullets from the car.

The girl is the daughter of a ward councillor of Barisal City Corporation, said police.
