NHRC worried over rising rape incidents

National Human Rights Commission Chairman Kazi Reazul Hoque yesterday expressed concern over the rising number of rape incidents across the country.

The NHRC chief in a statement condemned the recent rape incident in Bogra, rape and murder of a four-year-old girl in the capital, rape of a 10th grader who later became pregnant and committed suicide in Shariatpur, rape of a Tangail girl who was violated for seven months and rape of a speech impaired girl by her uncle.

“Violence against women, including rape and torture, have increased recently which hit the news headlines. The culprits have gone beyond control as justice was not ensured in time,” he said, adding that such crimes increased due to social unrest and culture of impunity.

A section of criminals were committing such crimes under political and administrative protection which is not acceptable at all, Reazul said.

The NHRC boss underscored the need for taking immediate steps like prompt arrest of the culprits, proper investigation into the incidents and quick disposal of cases to avert any recurrence of such crimes.

The commission also called upon the law enforcers to step up security measures to tackle the crime.

The rights watchdog hoped law enforces would immediately arrest all the alleged rapists, including Badal Mia over the Tangail rape incident, and take necessary measures to ensure exemplary punishment to them.
