The unbreakable spirit of the England football team

This World Cup has been difficult for many teams. With long travel, excessive heat and other issues, it has been a physical and mental challenge. And particularly so for the English who has had to face more additional distractions than everyone else; yet, admiringly, they come bouncing back.

The incidents before the tournament

How should one react when their belongings are stolen ahead of a big match? We expect there to be a lot of hue and cry and a disaster following the mental stress. That is exactly what happened to the England team before their match against Croatia. Their kits, boots, balls and training equipment were stolen ahead of the important match. That is enough to distress people mentally and is expected to have some effect on the match later.

Some would have a hissy fit. If anything like this happened in our local games, not only would the games be cancelled, but there would also be a major issue that would eventually go as far as violent clashes. But England stood their ground, kept it professional and sealed a statement victory against Croatia all the same.

Even before they arrived at their training base, there was another incident that made headlines, which would have caused them panic as well but none of these could break their spirit.

The curse on Kane

Football has many age-old cultures and beliefs. Even in 2026, superstitions and curses are taken very seriously in football. African witch doctors are notorious for putting curses on players and teams and what is surprising is that somehow it seems that the curses work. Or perhaps it is just a coincidence but that is beside the point.

I know it sounds like a joke. A curse? Really? In this day and age? Laugh all you want but in football, it is very serious.

This World Cup, English superstar Karry Kane was the victim of a curse put on him, or his leg to be more precise by an African witch doctor. And interestingly, Kane failed to score, causing the match to end in a draw. But Kane explained it professionally as all world-class players do. “I've been a striker long enough to know they don't always go in.” he had said which shows great spirit.

And despite the draw, England made it into the knockout stage.

The list goes on

There were more than just these incidents. A group of England supporters had faced a flag ban by FIFA saying they could not display their flag because it contained their team's badge which has a submarine on it. On the other hand, a more serious issue of injuries is clouding the English team’s World Cup expedition. At least two more players have been injured since the team’s last appearance on the pitch, and the effects of that will definitely show in the upcoming matches.

Even the fit players are suffering because of the long travel and heat which is taking its toll on the players.

While there were so many issues that could break the English team and its spirit, they handled everything like professionals and always bounced back, showing their unbreakable team spirit. Will this team spirit be enough to finally “bring it home” this year?
