Acting chief of Sylhet chamber, 3 others jailed
A Sylhet court on Tuesday sentenced four people, including the acting President of Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industry Zobayer Ahmed Chowdhury, to jail in a case for embezzling Tk 51 lakh from a bank.
The three other convicts are former second officer of City Bank Bandarbazar branch Nuruzzaman and former cashiers Abdul Quadir and Zakir Hossain.
Zobayer and Nuruzzaman were sentenced to two years rigorous imprisonment (RI) each while the rest to five years RI each. Sylhet Divisional Special Judge Golam Hossain pronounced the verdict.
According to the prosecution, City Bank Badarbazar branch granted Zobayer, also owner of a filling station in the city and general secretary of Sylhet Divisional Petroleum Dealers and Agents Association, a loan amounting to Tk 5 lakh in 2005.
But the leading businessman with connivance of the three bank staff raised the amount to 51 lakh by preparing fake documents and drew the money.
As the matter was detected during regular audit, the bank investigated it and then filed a case against the four.
