Huji man Obaida shown arrested in Sylhet case

Harkat-ul-Jihad (Huji) member Abu Obaida, charge sheeted in the case for murder attempt on Sheikh Hasina in Sylhet, has been shown arrested in Feni in one of the two cases now under trial at Sylhet courts.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sonagazi Police Station Md Nizam Uddin received the arrest warrant against the Huji militant sent by a Sylhet court through a Feni court on Monday.
The OC on Tuesday submitted a prayer to Feni Judicial Magistrate's Court, seeking its permission to show Obaida arrested. The court accepted the prayer.
Police arrested Abu Obadia alias Harun at Char Chandia village under Sonagazi upazila on October 12. He was shown arrested on October 13 under Section 54 of CrPC and produced in Feni Judicial court that sent him to jail.
Police sources said Huji hatched a plot to kill Sheikh Hasina on September 26, 2001 while she was on an election campaign in Sylhet.
Hours before the rally at Sylhet madrasa maidan, a bomb went off at a house in the town, killing two militants and injuring Abu Obaida alias Harun, 28, of Sonagazi, Feni, and Masud Ahmed Shakil of Dhaka.
Police arrested Abu Obaida and Sakil on the spot. Obaida had been under treatment at a hospital for long under police guard. After getting released on bail, he did not appear in Sylhet court.
Meanwhile, three fugitive convicted activists of the banned militant outfit, Jama'tul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), were sent to jail on their surrender to a court in Rajshahi on Tuesday.
Additional District and Sessions Judge-2 Lutfa Begum passed the order rejecting their bail prayers, reports UNB.
The convicts are Abdul Latif, 39, of Jikra village in Bagmara upazila of the district, Kamrul Master, 40, of Hatkalupara village in
Manda upazila, and Rafique, 31, of Atrai upazila under Naogaon district.
According to the case statement, the convicts picked up Fazlur Rahman from his Hasanpur village in Bagmara upazila and assaulted him. They also realised ransom from him.
Later, Fazlur Rahman filed a case on March 31, 2007 against 27 people, including BNP leaders and former Minister Barrister Aminul Haque and Shish Mohammad for abetting militancy, extortion and perpetrating torture.
After examining the records and witnesses, the court convicted 25 people, including Barrister Aminul, and awarded them 31 and a half years imprisonment in August 2007.
