Patient's death due to alleged neglect sparks protest
A patient died at Khagrachhari Adhunik Sadar Hospital yesterday allegedly due to wrong treatment by the doctor and negligence of nurse.
Mohammad Siraj Mia, 27, son of Tota Mia of Maidda Nagar under Panchhari upazila in Khagrachhari district, was admitted to the hospital at 3:15am yesterday as he had been suffering from malaria for the last few days, said the patients' relatives.
The on-duty doctor gave him oxygen support as he had breathing problem.
As the oxygen line opened accidentally at about 4:00am, the patient's relatives went to nurse Anita Chakma but she did not come to help, said the patient's relatives.
As the patient's condition deteriorated, an injection prescribed by Resident Medical Officer (RMO) Dr BK Tripura was pushed to his body at around 9:00am and he died five minutes later, said the patient's relatives and a few patients of the nearby beds.
Nurse Anita Chakma and hospital guard Swapon manhandled Siraj Mia's father-in-law Mohammad Safiqul Islam and wife Mukta when they protested the 'wrong treatment and negligence', they said.
Hearing the news, about 50 relatives of the deceased patient gathered in the hospital, chanted slogans demanding punishment to the responsible doctor and other staff.
Asked about the matter, RMO Dr BK Tripura denied the allegation of wrong treatment and negligence and said the patient had died of 'respiratory failure'.
Asked by journalists to show the prescription given by him, Dr Tripura said the patient's relatives had torn it.
He, however, said he has served a show cause notice on nurse Anita Chakma for her 'misbehaviour' with patient's relatives.
Civil Surgeon Dr Abu Taher told the reporters that he formed a three-member inquiry committee headed by Dr Sanjib Tripura. Two other members are Senior Health Education Officer Mamong Marma and Senior Nurse Kanon Barua.
"I shall take stern action if the doctor and nurse are found guilty," he said.
