Criminals fell 1,000 trees in Gaibandha

Criminals cut down about one thousand small trees planted around a pond at Bishnupur village under Palashbari upazila on Sunday night. Khalilur Rahman of Shampur village under the upazila purchased 1.20 areas of land at Bishnapur village four years ago and dug a big pond on it for fish cultivation. Khalil has been cultivating fish in the pond for the last for years. In 2008, he planted saplings of different kinds of trees around the pond and within one and a half years the saplings have grown into small trees. Khalil said the criminals cut down the trees at dead of night and present value of the felled trees will be Tk two lakh. He filed a case with Palashbari Police Station yesterday morning. No one was arrested in this connection as of filing of this report at 5:00pm yesterday. In Sherpur, two people were injured early Sunday in an attack by timber lifters at Baghahata village in Sribordi upazila, reports UNB. Balijuri range forest officer Kazi Abdul Mannan said, a gang of thieves stole valuable 'Akash Moni' timbers from the area late at night. When they were fleeing away along with the timbers in two trolleys, local people and forest guards after a hot chase held two of them identified as Alfaz and Nurul Huq. Later, the lifters regrouped and attacked them at about 2:30am leaving two local people - Jauj Mia and Dr Akram - injured. On information, police rushed in and rescued the injured and seized the trolleys. The two arrested timber lifters were later sent to jail.
