Jubo League, BCL activists beat up contractor
Activists of local Jubo League and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) beat up a contractor for dropping tender against their will at Ranishankoil upazila Local Government Engineering (LGED) office yesterday.
The activists created obstacle to dropping tender for construction of a union parishad building as they had decided to 'give' the work to a contractor of Thakurgaon through 'negotiation' in exchange of a handsome amount of money, said locals and victim Khokon Sarkar, who is also organising secretary of upazila Jubo League.
Tender was invited on December 22 last year for construction of Lehemba Union Parishad building in Ranishankoil upazila at a cost Tk 59 lakh, said upazila LGED Engineer Paritosh Chandra.
Last date for collection of schedule was Sunday and that for dropping tender was Monday.
Thirty copies of schedule were sold in Ranishankoil, 11 in Thakurgaon Sadar, seven in Haripur and eight in Pirganj upazila, said sources at LGED offices.
At about 11:00am on Monday, Khokon Sarkar went to LGED office to drop tender, he said, adding that there he saw Moti Master and Batul sitting on the tender box while about 150 men of Jubo League and BCL were present.
As they asked Khokon to leave the place without dropping tender, he went to the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) and informed him of the matter.
UNO Ershadul Haque instantly called police and helped him to drop tender.
When Khokon was going out of the upazila complex compound, the activists beat him up, leaving him injured. Hearing screams, the UNO with the help of the officer-in-charge of Ranishankoil Police Station rescued Khokon and sent him to Ranishankoil Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
Contacted at about 5:30pm yesterday, upazila LGED Engineer Paritosh Chandra Roy could not say how many tenders were dropped for the work.
