Different professional bodies, political and socio-cultural organisations yesterday formed a human chain on Abdul Hamid Road in the district town demanding immediate arrest of the culprits who threw acid on a two-and-a- half- year-old child in Pabna Sadar upazila on the night of January 19. The victim, Sultana Khatun, daughter of day labourer Amirul Islam of Atallahpur village, was first admitted to Pabna General Hospital and then shifted to Acid Survivors Foundation (ASF) Hospital in Dhaka. Social workers, journalists, teachers, cultural activists, 'Prothom Alo Bandhusabha Pabna unit, and representative from different non-governmental organisations (NGO) joined the human chain programme organised by 'Prothom-Alo Fund for Helping Acid-Burnt Women' for an hour from 11:00am. Sultana came under acid attack when she was asleep along with her parents at their house at the village at around 10:30pm. Her father Amirul filed a case with Pabna Sadar Police Station on January 20, accusing Md Arif, 18, son of his neighbour Moazzem, and Babul, 17, son of Abdur Rahim of the village, of throwing acid on his daughter. Police could not arrest the accused as of filing of this report at 5:00pm yesterday. “Neighbour Moazzem cut down the branches of our trees a few days ago. In retaliation, my husband felled a tree of the neighbour, which might be the reason behind the grisly acid attack on my innocent daughter,” Anwara said. She demanded exemplary punishment to the culprits.
