5 get life for murder in Habiganj
A Habiganj court yesterday awarded life imprisonment to five people for killing a Gram Parishad member in 2005 at Char Hamua under Habiganj Sadar upazila.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Awlad Hossain Bhuiyan also fined them taka 5000 each in default to which to suffer 6 months each.
The convicts are Shamim, his father Ali Ahmed (absconding), uncle Younus Ali, Shahjahan and Younus Ali's son Saiful Islam of the village.
According to prosecution, Gram Parishad member Abdul Quddus helped police arrest of notorious robber Shahjahan on December 5, 2005. As revenge, Shahjahan 's brother Shamim and other members of his family made a plan to kill Quddus.
On the night of December 29, 2005, they swooped on Abdul Quddus while he was returning home from a local market. They hit him with a billhook, leaving him severely injured.
Critically injured Quddus was rushed to the Sadar Hospital where he died soon after admission. Quddus's father Abdul Mannaf filed a case with Sadar Police Station the following day against the five.
After investigation, police pressed charges against the five. The court recorded statements of 15 prosecution witnesses during the trial.
