Private universities
With reference to the editorial published on your newspaper on June 13, 2010 entitled “Vat proposal on private universities be withdrawn”, I would like to thank you on behalf of students and guardians, for your positive perception on this issue and producing the write-up.
I thank you even more for mentioning the two common misconceptions of private universities in our country that 'private universities are high charging institutions catering to elitist demand for education and they are highly commercialised organizations indulging in skimming profits'.
Being a student of a private university, I too acknowledge that mushrooming of private universities indeed creates questions in people's mind about education quality. However, these private universities do produce a huge bulk of working individuals both male/female who graduate in due time with their desired qualifications. I appreciate that you acknowledge the calibre of the students of private universities and how they are being used in the private sectors.
In a private university, young minds of today are getting education that they normally would get abroad at a comparatively lesser price. However, yet it is much more than the state universities. Although, there are scholarship and other tuition waivers, still many find it difficult to cope up with the amount. If the vat is imposed on the private universities it is only the students who will suffer.
I also acknowledge with you that the government has all the right to monitor a university that is not state owned and put agenda to maintain education quality. But if the vat is imposed on us then not only us, the upcoming batch will also feel discouraged.
