2 journos killed, 288 tortured in 2011

Two journalists were murdered by miscreants while 288 journalists were tortured by political party cadres, criminals and members of law enforcement agencies in the country last year, said a Mass-line Media Centre (MMC) report yesterday. MMC, a media research organisation, prepared the report from news published in 10 national dailies since January 2011. The report says that 101 journalists were tortured by miscreants for publishing news against their interests and another 110 victimised while discharging professional duties. Incidents of repression against journalist were at their peak in September last year when 48 fell victim to torture, 25 had fabricated cases filed against them, five received death threats and 14 received injuries from beatings. The deceased journalists are Bajrakantha editor Hossain Altaf, whose body was recovered from a water tank in his house in the city, and Faridur Rahman Ranju, the Gobindaganj correspondent of daily Bhorer Daak who was slaughtered by miscreants.
