Demand teachers
RU Correspondent
Teachers of Rajshahi University (RU) yesterday handed over a memorandum to the vice chancellor with the demand that the preservation of Baro Kuthi Bhaban, a heritage structure in Shaheb Bazar area in Rajshahi city, be kept under the supervision of the university. The memorandum highlighted the fact that recently the authorities concerned took an initiative to hand over supervision of the Bhaban, which is the part of the university's heritage, to Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) from RU. They said the building was now being used as the teachers' and officials' club and urged the RU authorities to cancel the decision. Around 20 teachers led by Prof Moloy Kumar Bhoumick, Prof SM Abu Bakar, AKM Abdul Mazid, Prof M Abdur Rahman and Prof Nishith Kumar Pal met Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Abdus Sobhan at around 1:00pm and placed the memorandum with him. The VC assured them that he would look into their demand. RU administration sources said the syndicate body was yet to approve the decision. Baro Kuthi Bhaban was established over 400 years ago as a Dutch trading house in the centre of Rajshahi city. The first administrative activity of RU commenced in the Bhaban in 1953. Since then, it has been under the supervision of RU.
