<i>Youth crippled allegedly by UP chairman for 'immoral acts'</i>

A young man has received crippling injuries to his hands, legs and backbone as men allegedly set by former employer, also chairman of Daibogyokati union parishad (UP) under Morrelganj upazila in Bagerhat district, brutally tortured him centring his love affair with a schoolgirl. The victim, Rumman Sheikh, 25, son of Abdul Hakim Sheikh of Alti Burujbaria village under Morrelganj upazila, was admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) on the night of December 22, but he got discharged on Monday afternoon allegedly without proper treatment. "I fell in love with a schoolgirl when I was serving as bodyguard of Shahidul Islam Fakir, chairmen of Daibogyokati union parishad. In August last year, he sacked me, bringing false allegation of stalking the girl although my beloved or her parents never complained to him against me. Later his men brutally tortured me. They have spoilt my life," Rumman said as this correspondent visited him at the Surgery Ward of KMCH on Monday morning. "My son Rumman Sheikh was confined to the toilet of Daibogyokati union parishad office and later a few supporters of Chairman Shahidul Islam Fakir mercilessly beat him with seasoned sticks. They also hacked my son with an axe and left him for dead," said Rumman's father Abdul Hakim Sheikh. Contacted over cell phone, the UP chairman said, "I sacked Rumman in August last year for his immoral acts. Since then he made several attempts to kill me. My men did not beat Rumman. Men of the stalked girl beat him." Denying the allegation of lack of proper treatment of injured Rumman Sheikh, Dr Moaz Bin Jabal, assistant registrar of KMCH, said Rumman would never be able to stand on his own feet and work with his broken hands again. Contacted on Tuesday, OC Masudul Alam of Morrelganj police station said he would take stern legal action only after a case is filed in this connection by anyone of Rumman's family. Rumman's father, on the other hand, said he has not filed any case fearing reprisal from the UP chairman who acted as mastermind of the brutal attack on his son.
