4 killed in bus-auto-rickshaw collision in Jamalpur

At least four people were killed and 16 others injured when a bus collided with a battery-run auto-rickshaw at Lahirikanda area of Jamalpur Sadar upazila this evening.

The death toll may rise as several people are feared trapped under the bus, police said.

Inspector (Investigation) Noor Mohammad of Narundi Police Investigation Centre told The Daily Star that a Dhaka-bound bus of Rajib Paribahan from Jamalpur collided head-on with a battery-run auto-rickshaw, travelling from Gopalpur Bazar towards Nandina Bazar, near the Lahirikanda Eidgah ground around 7:00pm. The bus later plunged into a roadside ditch.

Three people died on the spot, while another died after being taken to a hospital. At least 16 others were injured, said Nazmus Sakib, officer-in-charge of Jamalpur Sadar Police Station.

The identities of the victims could not be known immediately.

He said the auto-rickshaw was crushed under the bus and the number of casualties could increase. Police and locals are conducting rescue operations at the site.

Vehicular movement on the Jamalpur-Mymensingh road remained suspended for nearly two hours following the accident.
