India records 2nd Omicron death; daily Covid-19 cases cross 1 lakh mark
India recorded its second Omicron-linked death today as the country's daily Covid-19 cases went past the one lakh mark.
A 55-year-old woman infected with Omicron died at the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) in Burla in Sambalpur district of Odisha on December 27, reports our New Delhi correspondent quoting India Today.
She reportedly did not have any foreign travel history. Omicron variant of Covid-19 virus was found in her samples after genome sequencing, the Indian media reported.
The woman was found infected with Omicron after genome sequencing of her samples; India Today said quoting the Balangir district administration statement issued yesterday.
Medical teams were dispatched to the woman's village for contact tracing. Swab samples of her family members have been sent for testing.
The first death from Omicron in India was reported from Udaipur, Rajasthan when a 73-year-old man died from the variant last month.
Meanwhile, India recorded 1,17,100 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, our New Delhi correspondent reports quoting the country's health ministry data.
This is the first time in seven months that daily cases crossed the one lakh mark in the country. On June 6, 2021, India had reported 1,14,460 new cases.
