A major focus of US State Department Counsellor Derek Chollet’s recent visit to Dhaka was the Rohingya crisis, and the US believes that addressing the problem involves restoration  of Myanmar’s democracy.

Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen had a telephone conversation yesterday with his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu to express solidarity with the government and people of Turkey, and to give assurance of additional support.

The foreign minister is expected to inaugurate a newly constructed Shaheed Minar in the City of Paris, Los Angeles

"We said one thing clearly -- Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stated in her speech on Wednesday that the next election will be credible, free and fair," said Quader.

"The United States wants to work with Bangladesh. Bangladesh has a multi-dimensional relationship with the US and the issue of sanctions on the Rab is very minor. The US delegation discussed the matters with the prime minister," Momen said

Bangladesh wants to send workers for reconstruction to quake-affected areas, Momen added.

State Minister for the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief Enamur Rahman yesterday expressed hope that China will help to repatriate Rohingya people.

Visiting Indian Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra has said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has the total support of his country.

If democracy in any country, including Bangladesh, erodes, it limits the US’s ability to cooperate with that country, US State Department Counsellor Derek Chollet has said.

Momen said Rab is a key force in law enforcement and earned people's confidence and trust over the years

The high-level US delegation, led by State Department Counselor Derek Chollet, arrived in Dhaka yesterday afternoon for a two-day visit as Washington seeks to advance the security partnership with Bangladesh and coordinate the response to the Rohingya crisis.

Bangladesh has not been invited to the Biden administration’s Summit for Democracy for the second time, while its South Asian neighbours -- India, the Maldives, Nepal and Pakistan -- made it to the list of invitees this year.

Kwatra arrived in Dhaka this evening on an official visit to Bangladesh at the invitation of Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen.
