Drives against crime, drugs to intensify: minister

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed yesterday said the government has taken no formal decision to launch a joint operation, but coordinated drives against crime, extortion, and drugs will continue and be intensified.

Police, BGB, Special Response Battalion (SRB), and Ansar regularly conduct such operations, he said.

Asked if the planned drives will resemble “Operation Clean Heart”, Salahuddin said, “There is no such plan. This is part of our regular activities.”

He was speaking to reporters after unveiling the foundation plaque for the new Bangladesh Ansar and VDP headquarters in Tejgaon, Dhaka.

Law enforcement personnel found negligent or involved in criminal activities will face more than withdrawal from their posts, the minister said.

Departmental and legal action, including criminal cases, is being taken when allegations are proved.
