Microplastics in toothpaste: Writ filed for investigation

Staff Correspondent

A Supreme Court lawyer yesterday filed a writ petition with the High Court, seeking order for an investigation into the presence of microplastics in 26 out of 34 toothpaste samples being sold in the market.

It urged the HC to direct the authorities concerned to conduct an inquiry and submit report in a month.

The petition, submitted by Advocate Abdullah Al Mamun, requested the HC to direct authorities to withdraw the toothpastes, in which harmful microplastics were found, from market.

In the petition, Mamun attached a report published in The Daily Star yesterday with the headline “Three out of four toothpastes have microplastics: Finds study by ESDO; brands claim they maintain regulatory standards”.

According to the report, “Microplastics were detected in 26 of 34 toothpaste samples tested in Bangladesh according to a new study, raising serious concerns about potential risks to human health and the environment”.
