Gazi Nazrul submits bail bond in attempted murder case filed in July

Gazi Nazrul Islam, lawmaker from Satkhira-4, submitted a bail bond on Sunday to a Dhaka court in connection with an attempted murder case.

The bond was submitted to the court of Dhaka Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Zonaid, a court staffer confirmed.

On August 10, Gazi Nazrul secured an eight-week anticipatory bail from a High Court bench in the case.

On July 21, his former driver Obaidur Rahman filed the case with Pallabi Police Station, accusing Gazi Nazrul along with Aminur Rahman, Masum Billah, Mostasim Billah and Rakibul Hasan.

According to case documents, Obaidur alleged the five assaulted him and attempted to kill him after he objected to Gazi Nazrul’s relationship with his niece, Mariam Khatun.

Mariam was found dead on Sunday at the lawmaker's flat at NAM Bhaban in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

The statement said Obaidur lived at his sister’s apartment in Pallabi’s Kalshi area, where Gazi Nazrul frequently visited. After Obaidur requested him to end the relationship with Mariam, the lawmaker allegedly threatened to kill him.

Obaidur further claimed that a group in Moghbazar obtained videos involving Gazi Nazrul and his niece and began blackmailing him. Suspecting Obaidur of recording and supplying the videos, Gazi Nazrul allegedly attacked him on July 14.

Obaidur said he was beaten with sticks and strangled before his mother and sister intervened. He later received treatment at Kurmitola General Hospital.

After video clips involving Gazi Nazrul and Mariam circulated on social media, the MP and members of his family said the woman was his second wife.

Jamaat-e-Islami expelled Gazi Nazrul from the party on July 21, following an internal investigation, citing evidence of “moral misconduct.”
