Ruling Awami League candidate Khan Ahmed Shuvo has won the by-elections in Tangail (Mirzapur) constituency.

The voter turnout stood at around 50 percent in the Narayanganj City Corporation election held today, said Election Commission Secretary Humayun Kabir Khandaker.

The Tangail-7 by-polls saw a low voter turnout with only 35 percent votes cast today, said Assistant Returning Officer Kamrul Hasan.

Narayanganj goes to polls today to pick its mayor and 36 councillors, in an election that can be expected to be a departure from the recent violence-ridden voting for Union Parishad seats.

The by-polls to Tangail-7 (Mirzapur) is being held today.

Taimur Alam Khandakar, the independent mayoral candidate in the Narayanganj City Corporation election, claimed that 10 leaders, activists, and election agents had been arrested in recent days.

All CCTV cameras (if any) inside polling booths will be switched off during the Narayaganj City Corporation election for the sake of privacy, said Returning Officer Mahfuza Akter today.

A three-tier security zone would be set up for Narayanganj City Corporation elections, the district’s Superintendent of Police Zaidul Alam said today.
