Dutch regulator fines Uber $966 mln over automated driver suspensions

The Dutch Data Protection Authority has fined Uber €825m, about $966m, over the use of automated systems to suspend or deactivate driver accounts without adequately informing those affected.

The regulator said the practices breached EU data protection rules governing automated decisions that can significantly affect people's lives. The case concerned incidents involving European drivers between 2018 and 2022 and originated from a complaint in France.

Uber disputes parts of the decision and said it would appeal, maintaining that permanent account deactivations were not carried out without human review. The penalty is the second-largest issued under the EU's General Data Protection Regulation.
