The shortage is the prime reason for the massive backlog of cases that plagues our lower and higher courts. But, the numbers indicate that this problem was not of the making of one day only. The numbers of Appellate judges and HC judges were only 11 in 2009 and 100 in 2012, respectively.

Environmental laws are there for a reason. Natural resources, such as land, need to be protected from misuse and the hills are protected by law for the sake of both safety of people and the ecology. We welcome the Supreme Court's verdict upholding the High Court ruling that declared the 16th Amendment of the Constitution, which empowered the parliament to impeach any apex court judge, illegal. The verdict finally reinstates the fundamental scheme of our Constitution that separates power between various organs of the state.

The latest report of the human rights watchdog Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) is worrying. Apart from 68 people killed in “shootouts” and “crossfire” encounters with the police and other law enforcing agencies in the first six months of 2017, 44 persons were picked up, allegedly by people identifying themselves as members of the law enforcing agencies, according to ASK, during this period.

It is disheartening to note that there are about 10 million out-of-school children, adolescents and youths in Bangladesh, as revealed by a new Unesco policy paper. Despite our efforts of curbing and criminalising child marriages, the practice continues. Here, we must point out yet again that the special provision to allow child marriages under special circumstances that has been added to the Child Marriage Restraint Act could undo the limited progress we had made to protect the rights of girls in this country, and give such marriages a legal sanction.

Eid holidays inevitably bring us both joy and sorrow. Sorrow because there are so many road accidents taking away precious lives.

The biggest problem with trafficking from Bangladesh is of course the inability to successfully address the issue of high recruitment fees which leads to victims becoming entrapped into bonded labour. The problems are multifarious and require political will to rectify the systemic faults that exist. Unless we start making some changes, Bangladesh's position is not likely to see improvement in the next year's report.
