A group of fifth-grade students from the Australian International School (AUSIS) visited The Daily Star Centre in Dhaka on September 2, 2026, as part of an educational trip aimed at giving them first-hand insight into the workings of a national newspaper.

The students and their teachers were warmly welcomed by Arshif Siaum, Senior Manager, Digital Operations. They then joined members of The Daily Star team for a presentation and an interactive discussion covering different aspects of the newspaper’s operations.

Md Abul Kalam Azad, Digital Growth Editor, gave the students an overview of how The Daily Star operates on a daily basis, explaining the flow of news from reporting to publication, the use of artificial intelligence (AI), fact-checking and verification, and the distribution of both print and online editions.

Azad particularly emphasised the importance of human oversight in journalism, explaining that editorial judgement and verification remain essential when dealing with news reports. His presentation helped students understand how journalists distinguish reliable information from misinformation and why accuracy and accountability are central to responsible journalism.

To give the young visitors a glimpse into the kind of journalism produced by The Daily Star, he also showcased interactive investigative stories on major national issues, including enforced disappearances and the country’s energy crisis.

The students actively participated in the session, asking spontaneous questions about fake news, the use of AI in journalism, newspaper circulation, and other aspects of the media. Their curiosity made the discussion lively and engaging.

Following Azad’s presentation, the students met the Campus, Rising Stars, and Star Youth team to learn about the newspaper’s feature sections and the process of creating content for younger audiences. The discussion covered a wide range of topics, including meeting deadlines, social media engagement, and the challenges of producing content that is relevant and appealing to young readers.

Md Tajdin Hassan, Chief Business Officer, The Daily Star, later joined the session and brought the interactive discussion to a close.

The educational visit concluded with a photo session. Through their interaction with journalists and staff members, the AUSIS students gained an understanding of the work involved in producing news for both print and digital platforms. The visit also offered them a broader perspective on the role of journalism, technology, and responsible information sharing in the digital age.
