Hridoy joins Shakib-Mushfiq's elite list with double ton

Bangladesh ‘A’ skipper Tawhid Hridoy struck a brilliant double century against South Africa ‘A’ on the third day of the second four-day match at NWC Oval in Potchefstroom yesterday, helping the visitors close in on the hosts’ first-innings total.

Resuming on 201 for four, Hridoy, unbeaten on 75 overnight, reached his double hundred off 335 balls, hitting 22 fours and a six.

It was Hridoy’s second double century in first-class cricket, having previously scored 217 for BCB South Zone against North Zone in Chattogram.

The 24-year-old also joined an elite list of Bangladesh batters to score first-class double centuries abroad, alongside Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan and Shahriar Hossain. Mushfiqur scored an unbeaten 200 in 2013, while Shakib made 217 in 2017, with both achieving the feat in Test cricket.

But Shahriar Hossain did it first in first-class cricket back in 2003, scoring 218 against Defence Housing Authority in Patrons Trophy in Karachi.

Another overnight unbeaten batter, Jaker Ali, meanwhile, narrowly missed out on a century after scoring 94 off 168 balls.

Hridoy then added 185 runs for the sixth wicket with Mohammad Saifuddin, who was dismissed for 87 off 171 balls on the final delivery of the day.

Bangladesh ‘A’ finished the day on 471 for six, still trailing South Africa ‘A’ by 41 runs in the first innings after the hosts had posted 512.
