‘He cannot be replaced’: Ancelotti confirms Neymar will not return to national duty

Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that Neymar will not return to the Brazil national team, bringing an emotional end to hopes that the legendary forward could once again wear the famous yellow shirt.

Speaking to CNN Esportes, the Brazil coach said Neymar deserved to be part of the World Cup squad because of his extraordinary qualities, but revealed that the forward has already decided against returning to international football.

“Ney deserved to go to the World Cup: he cannot be replaced, he is a unique player for his qualities,” Ancelotti said.

The statement underlines just how difficult Neymar will be to replace. For more than a decade, the forward has been one of the defining figures of Brazilian football, producing moments of brilliance and carrying the expectations of an entire nation. Brazil may develop another world-class star, but Ancelotti made it clear that there will never be a simple replacement for Neymar.

However, with Neymar's international career now seemingly over, Ancelotti believes Brazil must turn its attention towards the future. The Italian coach wants to give greater opportunities to a younger generation as the Selecao begin preparing for the 2030 World Cup.

“Now we have to focus on the young Brazilians,” Ancelotti said.

He pointed towards players born in 2004, 2005 and 2006, while also highlighting younger talents born in 2008 who have yet to establish themselves at senior level. Ancelotti believes this is the right moment to invest in those players and give them the opportunity to grow within the national-team environment.

Brazil's rebuilding process will involve close cooperation between the senior side and the Under-20 and Under-17 teams. Ancelotti revealed that the different coaching staffs are already working together to manage competitions and monitor the development of emerging players.

The objective is clear: Brazil must build a strong team rather than search for another Neymar.

“I believe that in modern football you need team play, not individual talent,” Ancelotti said. “Of course, if you have great individual talent, you have a greater chance of winning, but modern football does not allow a lack of team play.”

For Brazil, the challenge is now enormous. Neymar's creativity, personality and ability to change a game cannot simply be copied by another player. His absence will leave a huge hole in the Selecao, but Ancelotti believes the answer is to create a stronger collective capable of competing without depending on one superstar.

Brazil's recent World Cup disappointment has made that rebuilding process even more important. Ancelotti admitted that the result was frustrating but insisted that the team must now look forward.

“We have time to prepare a new generation of players,” he said.

Brazil will use upcoming friendlies to assess some of the country's brightest young talents, with matches against Australia on September 25 and 29 before facing India on October 3.
