Mohammedan win, but Chandpur pitch raises fresh questions over Bangladesh football
Mohammedan Sporting Club began their Bangladesh Football League campaign with a 1–0 victory over Fakirerpool Young Mens Club at the Chandpur District Stadium on Friday, but the result was overshadowed by the alarming condition of the playing surface.
The pitch at Chandpur District Stadium was visibly poor, with little or no grass across several areas and a rough, uneven surface. For a professional football match, the condition of the ground raised serious questions about the standard of facilities available to teams competing in Bangladesh’s top-level football.
Players were forced to negotiate an unpredictable surface throughout the match, making ball control and passing difficult. A professional league requires grounds that allow players to demonstrate their technical abilities, but pitches of this quality can affect the rhythm, quality and overall standard of football.
More importantly, the situation is not new. Poor playing surfaces have been a recurring feature of domestic football in Bangladesh. The continued use of unsuitable grounds raises concerns about how effectively the country can develop technically strong players and improve the overall quality of its domestic competition.
The standard of playing facilities is inevitably connected to the standard of football being produced, including the preparation of players for the national team.
Against that backdrop, Mohammedan secured an important victory under their new Argentinian-Spanish coach Fernando Santiago Varela.
The Black and Whites scored the only goal of the match in the 18th minute. Uzbek midfielder and captain Mozzaffarov delivered a corner into the Fakirerpool penalty area, and Zahid Hossain Shanto produced an excellent header to put Mohammedan ahead.
Fakirerpool responded with several attempts to level the score, but Mohammedan goalkeeper Anisur Rahman Zico played a crucial role on his debut for the club. The newly signed goalkeeper made two important saves in the first half to preserve Mohammedan’s advantage.
Fakirerpool, playing their second match of the season, had opportunities through Sulaiman Silla and Saif, but poor finishing prevented them from finding an equaliser. Silla had scored twice in their previous victory over Dhaka Wanderers Club.
Fakirerpool defeated Mohammedan for the first time in the professional era last January. This time, however, Mohammedan returned the favour with a narrow victory.
Elsewhere, Brothers Union drew 1–1 with PWD, while Bangladesh Police defeated Chattogram City FC 3–0.
