Bangladesh signs Brighton and Helsinki Declaration

Bangladesh signed the Brighton and Helsinki Declaration on Wednesday, marking a significant step towards promoting equal rights, safety and participation for women in sport.

Bangladesh Women’s Sports Association president Barrister Sarwat Siraj Shukla signed the declaration at a Dhaka hotel. Lisa O’Keefe MBE, secretary general of the International Working Group on Women & Sport, joined the ceremony virtually from the UK.

Shukla said the declaration would provide a framework for making sport safer, more inclusive and professional for women while creating greater opportunities for Bangladeshi female athletes.

“This is a historic milestone in taking women’s sport to international standards and ensuring equal opportunities, safety and participation,” she said.

O’Keefe described Bangladesh’s decision as a “groundbreaking step” towards advancing and empowering women in sport and encouraged other national federations to follow suit.

The ceremony was attended by representatives of the British High Commission, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Bangladesh Olympic Association, BKSP and various national sports federations.
