Boxer Rakib knocked out; Swimmer Rafi betters personal best

Boxer Rakib Hossain's Commonwealth Games campaign ended in heartbreak after the 55kg contender suffered a first-round stoppage defeat to Australia's Jye Dixon in the quarterfinals in Glasgow on Tuesday, while swimmer Samiul Islam Rafi bowed out after setting a new personal best in the men's 50m butterfly.

Rakib had reached the last eight with victories over the Solomon Islands' Clinton Tetekana and Papua New Guinea's Bid Michael Inoino in the round of 32 and round of 16 respectively.

A victory over Dixon would have guaranteed the Bangladeshi boxer at least a bronze medal, but the referee stopped the contest in the opening round, awarding the bout to the 21-year-old Australian.

Meanwhile, boxer Ruhin Reza was also eliminated from the competition after suffering a unanimous 5-0 defeat to Namibia's Tryagain Morning Ndevelo in the round of 16 on Monday.

In swimming, Samiul Islam Rafi failed to progress from the heats of the men's 50m butterfly but improved his personal best while finishing second in Heat 4.

Rafi clocked 25.23 seconds to finish 36th overall among 70 competitors, eclipsing his previous best of 26.01 seconds.

Like Rafi, hurdler Lushad Islam also produced a season-best performance despite exiting in the heats of the men's 400m hurdles. Lushad finished 36th among 46 athletes after clocking 49.76 seconds.
