Del Bosque tells Spain not to underestimate 'nuisance' Argentina

Former Spain coach Vicente del Bosque believes Spain hold the edge ahead of the FIFA World Cup final against Argentina but has warned that the defending champions' resilience, experience and tactical discipline make them dangerous opponents.

The 75-year-old, who guided Spain to their maiden World Cup title in 2010 with a 1-0 victory over the Netherlands, said La Roja must not underestimate Lionel Scaloni's side despite their impressive run to the final.

"Argentina are a tough team to play against--a real nuisance, if I may use the word -- and they know exactly what they need to do," Del Bosque told El País in an interview published on Saturday.

The World Cup final will be played at New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday, with Spain chasing a second world title and Argentina bidding to become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the trophy.

Del Bosque said Spain's performances throughout the tournament had convinced him they enter the final as slight favourites, but pointed to Argentina's comeback victory over England in the semi-finals as a reminder of their ability to rise to the occasion.

"I see the final as favouring Spain, but they need to be wary of the Argentines, given how difficult they are to face and their experience," he said.

Spain have recovered strongly after opening their campaign with a draw against Cape Verde, winning six successive matches to reach the final. Luis de la Fuente's side have conceded just one goal throughout the tournament and booked their place in the title decider with a 2-0 victory over France in the semifinals.

Del Bosque credited Spain's consistency and control as the foundations of their campaign.

"In the matches we have watched, the game was played exactly on the national team's terms; they dominated the situation and demonstrated both assurance and confidence," he said.

Spain are aiming to lift the World Cup for the first time since their triumph in South Africa 16 years ago, while Argentina are seeking back-to-back titles after winning the 2022 tournament in Qatar. Del Bosque believes Spain have the quality to prevail, provided they do not underestimate an Argentina side renowned for thriving in difficult situations.
